Alvin’s ACL tear happened last fall. One minute he was fine; the next he was hopping on 3 legs. In retrospect, the tear was an accident waiting to happen. Jumping off of furniture and running at high speed on slippery wood floors contributed significantly to his injury.
The initial treatment the vet recommended was water therapy. We could exercise him in a pool or sign up for sessions at the vet hospital. Since we have no pool access and Alvin hates the ocean, we opted for second alternative.
We got to the vet hospital for his first session too late to take advantage of the water therapy. According to the hospital vet, had completely severed his ACL in the week between the initial vet visit and the hospital visit. Surgery was the only option at this point.
Note that dogs have 2 ligaments holding the upper and lower leg bones together. Humans have 4 ligaments performing the same function. When a dog severs one of the two ligaments, he’s unlikely to walk normally again without surgery.
After Alvin’s surgery, we were re-habbing his knee at home using exercises supplied by his vet. The home rehab failed. Four weeks post-surgery he was walking half the time and hopping or limping the rest of the time.
It takes several months for a dog to completely recover from ACL surgery, but we knew he needed more help than what we could provide. His vet recommended water therapy again.
Physical Therapy for Alvin
We signed up Alvin for 10 sessions, twice per week for 5 weeks. The hospital vet re-examined him and decided he had learned to cope with the injury by developing the hopping habit.
Each session consisted of

Many pet parents seem concerned, when it comes to adopt a cat with already having a dog or vice versa. They are worried whether a dog and a cat can go together without creating problems for each other. If you are one of them, then the insight thrown below may help resolve most of your anxieties.
When looking at these two animals – dogs and cats are often seen as natural enemies, but when it comes to be a family both can live happily in one house. Felines and canines when introduced properly, they will be good friends and there would be no need to keep them in separate places.
However, some dogs may have an uncontrollable prey drive towards cats, especially kittens. If your dog falls in the list, then you cannot have a cat in your house as it would be a risk to their lives.
Some breeds with high drive for preying are terriers, huskies and some ex-racer greyhounds and collies. Having such a dog in your house, you need to be extra careful when thinking to add a feline member to your family. Unless you know that your dog is cool with cats, it is highly dangerous to consider introducing a cat.
When it comes to cats, there are few of them in the colony that are afraid of dogs if they had any of the bad experiences with them. They will love to stay in dog-free house. Similarly, some dogs are uncomfortable staying with cats.
Introducing Your Cat to Your Dog
Keep your dog and cat in separate rooms before introducing them to each other. If the cat is new to the house, he/she will take some time to

When making the decision to raise livestock for profits you should be prepared for some serious work ahead. Raising livestock requires dedication and funds for feeding and animal acquisition. But there’s no need to feel down because all your hard work will pay off.
As a beginner livestock farmer you can farm any type of livestock as long as you get the right guidelines. You can raise chickens, cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, ducks or horses in your farm. In this article we are going to cover how to raise chickens and ducks.
All across the nation people are beginning to raise chickens. Some just want to get back to the basics whilst others it maybe the state of the economy. Either reason chickens are interesting birds to raise and can be profitable too.
When raising chickens you have to first build them a chicken house. The house can be in form of a chicken coop, livestock barn or even a chicken tractor. Chickens will use the house for shelter, lay their eggs and roost at night.
Equipment that is needed for chickens is a poultry waterer, nesting boxes and feeder equipment. The type of waterers and feeders depends on the age of your chickens so make sure you know what chickens you want to raise before buying your equipment.

Spring is finally on the way and many people are already seeing a welcome increase in eggs from their hens. When the eggs start coming, calcium levels are important. Do you know how to make sure your hens have what it takes to make strong, unbreakable egg shells?
Calcium, like many other vital nutrients, is dependent on other minerals and vitamins in order to be available to the body. In the case of calcium, the two nutrients that affect it most are phosphorus and vitamin D3. Calcium, Vitamin D3, and phosphorus form a sort of 3-legged stool; if any of these nutrients are out of balance, the whole stool topples and problems begin.
Calcium and phosphorus
Phosphorus is a nutrient that is highly available in the cereals or grains that make up the majority of any chicken diet. Phosphorus deficiencies are rare with poultry given the availability and low price of grains. However, if your birds’ diets are too high in grains, the phosphorus levels can cause an imbalance.
Adding scratch and other grains to the diet on top of a balanced and complete pelleted ration can cause an imbalance of the so-called “Cal-Phos” ratio. When phosphorus levels are too high, the body will pull calcium not only from egg shell production but also from the beak, bones, and other vital areas where calcium is required. Make sure that any added feeds and treats do not exceed 10% of the total weight of the diet.
Calcium and Vitamin D3
Vitamin D3 is also a vital partner in the absorption of calcium. While D3 is readily available in correct amounts in a balanced chicken feed ration, its production within the body depends on sunshine which converts a D3 precursor into the form that

Birds add natural beauty to gardens, parks and other landscapes with their gorgeous colorations, happy chirps, and graceful flight. These feathered creatures also assist in plant pollination (i.e., hummingbirds) and in pest control by eating slugs, snails and wireworms (i.e., purple martins). It then comes as little surprise then that professional gardeners and landscapers plan outdoor spaces with the goal of attracting beneficial bird species.
The best way to attract birds into the garden is to concentrate on the cultivation of native plants including shrubs, vines and trees. Doing so is beneficial for several reasons:
1. Indigenous plants have evolved alongside the local wildlife and, thus, are most likely to provide the right attributes for birds to co-exist with. For example, hummingbirds drink the nectar from plants and, in the process, assist in the pollination of the species to form a mutually beneficial relationship.
2. Native plants create natural corridors where birds can fly back and forth in their natural habitats. In contrast, non-native plants can disrupt the flow, so to speak. Such aspect of plant cultivation is of particular importance to areas impacted by manmade development projects.
3. Indigenous plants will not crowd out other plant species, thus, ensuring diversity of plant life beneficial for the attraction of the local wildlife including birds. In contrast, non-native plants may provide abundant food for birds but are more likely to invade the entire area; examples include Japanese honeysuckle and buckthorn.
4. Of course, the definition of native plants will vary from one location to the next, which is also compounded by the fact that many plants are considered indigenous to several zones. The best way to determine whether a plant is indigenous to the area is to ask the experienced staff of your local

1. Be the alpha.
Dogs are wired to follow a leader, so it is important to establish your role as leader right away. Tone and body language are perceivable by dogs, so they may test certain behaviors such as barking or chewing if they observe your demeanor as weak and persuadable.
Take initiative in showing confidence from the early stages of your relationship. It may seem natural to constantly shower your pet with affection, but remember to remain stern on house rules and assertive in your training approach.
2. Consistency is key.
One of the most influential principles in learning how to train your dog is consistency with rules and commands. Stay firm on what is allowed and not allowed by deciding on “house rules” as soon as your new dog arrives. If your pet sees inconsistencies or receives rewards for unwanted behavior, it may confuse him and result in picking up bad habits.
Your dog will notice who allows him to get away with different behaviors. Make sure to alert all household members and house guests of the rules to create a support system for your furry loved one.
3. Make a dog nest.
Pets, like humans, need a space of their own. Set up a place where your dog can sleep and rest undisturbed by other pets or other family members. This is their comfort zone, so try adding blankets or her favorite chew toys for that extra coziness. If you’re training your dog to stay off the bed, keep her spot close by so she knows where to go during bedtime while still feeling the security of being close to you.
4. Be mindful of your dog’s name.

Why Pet Food Isn’t the Best Option
The Dogington Post noticed that most pet food developers and distributors are also companies that manufacture human food. However, the care and focus on human food production is not of the same level when it comes to pet food production. Although the animal industry is convenient for pet owners, it isn’t the best option when it comes to your favorite pets.
According to Dr. Tom Lonsdale, “dogs, cats, ferrets fed a regular diet of processed food suffer from a range of cruel and debilitating diseases.” Who could forget the disastrous pet food recall of 2007? The Dogington Post reminisced that time when reports of kidney failure and sickness were all around. Later on, it was found out that melamine, a chemical for plastic and fertilizer production, has been added to the pet food ingredient just to increase the protein content and quality, resulting to thousands of deaths of pets that year.
Marlene Masney, the author for “Real Food for Dogs,” commented that the ingredients in these commercial pet foods are not fit for canines. She noted that it gets rid of the natural enzymes and lowers vitamin values due to the chemicals added artificially. Grain combined with the high ratio of sugar, salt and fat can cause illnesses later on. Masney noted that it’s a contributing factor towards allergies, infections, and problems with vital organ functionality. Often the most infected are the bladders, kidneys, and liver.
In the end, convenience can cause more inconvenience in the future when it comes to your pet’s health. The good thing is that it isn’t your only option of what to feed your pets.
What Food Should You Feed Your Dogs?
Dr. Lonsdale noted accordingly that “pet owners can

There are points in favour and against letting your cat go outside but if you have decided that you want them to have some access to the larger world, then there are some tips to keep them safe. Whether you are allowing them free reign or are going out with them on a leash, there are some important factors to consider before letting them out for the first time.
Never let your cat leave the house for the first time without some means of tracing them back to you. One popular choice is a microchip, as this can be scanned by a vet or animal shelter if the animal goes missing and will see you reunited with your wayward pet. The chip also stops someone taking the cat and pretend it is theirs, more of an issue for expensive pedigree cats. The chip is only the size of a grain of rice and is placed under the skin in the back of the neck with no pain to the cat other than a pinprick.
A collar is another good measure, even if you have a microchip. Get your kitten used to the collar from a young age then it will become a normal part of life. Size is important – it should be tight enough that it cannot snag on anything but obviously not too tight. Make sure it has a small tag on it with your contact information so that if the kitten gets lost, it can be brought home easily.
Kittens shouldn’t be allowed outside until at least a week after finishing their final vaccinations to reduce the risk of contracting an illness of some kind. Some owners also wait until they have

Kittens are enormous fun, little furry bundles of energy who are inquisitive and curious about everything. If you have never had a kitten before, then you are in for a treat. But you may be in a surprise if you don’t know what to expect so here are a few tips.
The first thing to understand are the stages of development that a kitten goes through. This affects their behaviour and their food requirements. Most of the time, you won’t get a kitten until it is at least eight weeks old, unless it has been abandoned by its mother and you are rearing it. At this early stage, they cannot regulate their own body temperature so need Mum for this as well as feeding from her. They have limited vision and coordination abilities and have trouble going to the toilet without assistance.
Kittens are normally weaned between eight and eleven weeks old and go straight onto special kitten food. This is filled with energy that they need to grow as well as being easy to digest. Their complex motor skills will emerge during this time and jumping, running and playing will be common. They are very active so need a degree of monitoring and the house will need kitten-proofing to avoid accidents. Some people choose to keep the kitten in one or a series of rooms during this time to monitor what they are doing.
From two to four months old, they will grow rapidly and need three times more energy from their food than an adult cat, usually around three or four meals a day. These need to be at least 30% good quality protein. Between four and six months, they reach adolescence and therefore sexual maturity. This is the time

t is often said that it is easier to introduce a dog to a cat than a kitten to a cat. This is because the dog won’t be viewed as competition for resources, territory and affection in the way a kitten is. But this isn’t to say that it can’t be done successfully and here are a few tips.
Understanding your cat
Cats have a territory even if this constitutes the rooms in the house and the arrival of a new kitten can be seen as an infringement on this territory. One of the best tips when it comes to selecting a new kitten is to understand the personality of your existing cat and pick a kitten accordingly. For example, if your existing cat is nervous and shy, then don’t purchase an overly confident kitten who could intimidate the cat and cause conflict. Try to get cats that have similar personalities in the hope that they will gel together.
Of course, this is difficult to do in some situations, such as from a shelter. You don’t spend enough time with the kitten before adoption to get a feel for who they are. Then the other plan is to make sure you can separate the kitten from the cat while they settle in.
The ideal of a kitten crate or box may sound harsh but it a good safe way to introduce an adult cat to the newcomer. This prevents fights that can lead to long term animosity and problems as well as possible short term injuries. Purchasing a cat crate to use for the kitten until things have settle down can be a worthwhile purchase.
Inside the crate needs to be their new food and water bowls, their own cat

If you have adopted a new kitten you are probably wondering what you should name him or her. Many people just choose a name they like and leave it at that. However, cat lovers like myself, often put a bit more thought into it.
When selecting a name for your cat, it is helpful to first look into what breed they are. Depending on the breed, you may want to look for Russian cat names or Japanese cat names.
Coat pattern and color are also of great importance. Many people like to name their cat based off of the color of the coat. For example, black cats often get names such as charcoal or nighthawk, whereas more appropriate names for white cats might be Eskimo, Frosty or Icy.
Some common black and white cat names are Oreo, Domino or Dice. Siamese cats, which is a breed that originates from Thailand, are sometimes given Thai names. If your cat is a Russian Blue, you might consider the name Boris or Svetlana.
Of course, you also want to consider the personality of the cat. Is your cat clumsy or poised, lazy or energetic? Is your cat friendly or shy? Naming a lazy cat Electricity, for example, just doesn’t quite fit, does it?
Another thing to consider is, are you looking for unisex cat names? Some people are partial to unisex names for their cat such as Lightning, Mocha and Pinwheel. Others prefer very feminine or masculine names such as Fiona, Bianca, Butch or Axel.
Some people like to name their cats after famous characters or animals. I have seen cats names Lassie and Snoopy as well as Garfield and Heathcliff. Choosing a famous character or animal is a great way to quickly and easily

Keeping hens for your own fresh eggs is gaining popularity in today’s world of growing your own so you know what goes into it and therefore what comes out. However, having your own fresh eggs is not the only reason for keeping hens.
Hens have their own personality and are in fact a great pet. Whilst they may not come to you for a pat, they are extremely inquisitive and charming.
You will find yourself watching your hens and enjoying their personalities.
Once your hens start to lay they become a lot more approachable and wishing to be closer to you.
It is great to see the hens do the ‘chicken lay squat’ when you put your hand out. This is where the hen will squat closer to the ground and hunch their wings.
You might enjoy walking outside during the day and seeing the hens come running towards you. It is actually quite comical watching them run.
You will have to make sure that doors are closed or you may find a hen coming in to check up on you. It can be quite a sight to be working at your computer only to be interrupted by a hen walking across the keyboard. Adds a dimension to the typing!!
Keeping hens can also be extremely beneficial for your garden. If you are lucky to have space and happy to allow the hens to roam free during the day, then hens certainly love it. However, hens can manage to spread dirt around. If this is not an outcome you desire then you may have to discourage your hens from you garden beds.
One way of controlling where your hens may roam is by a portable tractor. This is an enclosure
